Bridgeport cop Portmore title

Bridgeport, for the second time in three years, captured the Portmoreleg of the Social Development Commission (SDC), All-Island Twenty20 community cricket tournament with a 35-run victory over Washington Mews at the Portsmouth ground last Saturday.

Bridgeport, playing in front of a partisan crowd, received an early setback when they lost former Jamaica opener Delroy Morgan with the score on six. However, Brian Latore joined Robert Weir, and the two put on a 76-run partnership for the second wicket, with Latore hitting 65. Latore got support from Romeo Parker, who scored 26 as Bridgeport reached 154 for seven off their 20 overs.

Washington Mews put up little resistance and were dismissed for 129. Jermaine Ennis with 37 was the only batsman that appeared ready to put up a fight. Gavaska Brown made 21, but gave away his wicket when he looked as if he could have done some damage. Kerron Davis also made 21. Morgan (2-15) and Romeo Duncan (2-17) took most wickets for Bridgeport.

At the end of the match, a jubilant Bridgeport team lifted the championship trophy, with representatives from the SDC looking on.

With the win, Bridgeport joined 14 other parish winners and the best second runner-up team in the second phase of the competition.
