VIRGINIA (AP):

Virginia State Police say a pilot from North Carolina was attempting an emergency landing when his single-engine plane hit several treetops and crashed into a backyard in New Kent County.

Sergeant Thomas Molnar says in a news release that 29-year-old William R. Lackey III of Raleigh, N.C., suffered injuries that weren't life threatening and was taken to a hospital.

Molnar says Lackey was attempting to land at Richmond International Airport when he missed his first approach yesterday morning. The 1982 Piper Warrior II ran out of fuel as he tried a second approach. He was attempting to glide to a landing in a field when the plane hit the treetops and crashed.

Lackey had left Chatham, Massachussetts, late Monday night. He had planned to fly from Richmond to Sanford, N.C.
