ONLINE FEEDBACK

Published:Thursday | July 28, 2011 | 12:00 AM

Responses from online readers to yesterday's story 'Scrap metal ban disappoints Samuda'.

Mr Samuda, why did it take you so long to implement the checks and balances you talked about? The theft of infrastructural and business metal has been going on for years without any remedy.

Those involved in the business knew those who were buying stolen metals, but did not expose them.

I am certain Dr Tufton will find a way out for honest businesses to resume the trade.

Isn't it amazing that you always hear "I was going to do this" and "this plan was just about to be done" - when you're gone! Samuda had this post from 2007; why should it have taken him this long?

Why even allow businesses that generate their own scrap metal to be able to export? All they are going to do is get metal from people for a 'smalls' and make up what they already have, knowing how corrupt and lawless we can be.

I do not agree with Tufton's decision to ban the trade without first trying himself to fix the problem. This is a clear case of punishing the child who set the house on fire with the candle you placed on the bed.

It is unfair that the good are being made to suffer for the few rogues. I'm sure that the Government could put institutional knowledge (Samuda) and PR expertise (Tufton) together to find a better policy to manage the system.

Yet again, Christopher Tufton has proven that he is the man with the plan! We needed a no-nonsense approach, and we got it. We need similar attitudes now in other ministries, especially security.

Well done! Shut it down! You don't have to be a wizard to realise that in two to three years' time, there wouldn't be a Jamaica. It's very sad. And the people who are making the real money are the buyers, not the sellers.
