Jamaica fall behind Barbados
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):
Barbados narrowly grabbed first-innings lead over Jamaica yesterday, to take the advantage in their third-round WICB Regional Under-19 match at Enmore.
Barbados claimed two wickets in successive overs to end Jamaica's resistance at 171, as they chased 177 for first-innings lead.
At the close, they were five without loss in their second innings.
Resuming the second day on one without loss, Jamaica threatened through West Indies Under-19 batsman John Campbell who got 29, Donovan Nelson who stroked 28, and Ragni Francis 27.
However, off-spinner and captain Kraigg Brathwaite claimed four for 33 with support coming from Chaim Holder, who finished with three for 43 with his off breaks, to give Barbados the edge.
Slide
Openers Bryan Gayle and Campbell gave Jamaica a solid start with a stand of 39 for the first wicket, before Gayle was out lbw to pacer Justin Greaves (2-29) for 18.
His dismissal triggered a slide as Campbell was bowled by Brathwaite at 54 for two after striking two fours, and 10 runs later, Ramon Senior was caught close in by Shane Parris off Holder.
Wickets tumbled steadily and when Fabian Allen (10) fell to a catch at slip by Anthony Alleyne off leg-spinner Amir Thomas, Jamaica were struggling at 120 for seven.
However, Nelson and Francis combined to patch up the innings with a fighting eighth-wicket stand of 39 that frustrated Barbados' bowlers.
Nelson faced 137 balls and hit no boundaries in his knock while Francis' 27 needed 82 balls with one four.
Francis was eventually caught at extra cover by Shane Parris off Greaves at 159 for eight, but Jamaica inched their way to 171 before Nelson perished, bowled by Brathwaite.
In the next over, Holder breached Marquini Mindley's defence for four to hand Barbados a small lead.
