10 beaten to death

NEW DELHI (AP):

Police say at least 10 people were beaten to death in southern India by a group of angry villagers who thought they were thieves.

Police official Satish told The Associated Press yesterday that the incident took place in the village of Barlahally Cross in Karnataka state late Tuesday. Satish goes by one name.

He said it appeared that the 10 were beaten to death with stones and sticks. He said police were investigating.

Few other details were immediately available. The area is about 35 miles (60 kilometres) north of the state capital of Bangalore.
