The eight teams that will contest the 'premier league' phase of the 2011 J. Wray & Nephew-sponsored Western Domino League were decided last weekend following the penultimate round of matches in the 20-team competition, which features two zones of 10 teams each.

"The top four teams in the two zones have now been decided, so we now have our qualifier for the 'premier league', which will have eight teams vying for the championship trophy and the $100,000 winner's purse," said Clint Parkins, the competition public relations officer. "The bottom six in the two zones will play off in a Division One League for a winner's purse of $55,000."

The eight qualifiers, their zones and points accumulated are as follows: Zone A - Tuff Gong 55, Strike Force 54, Dynasty 52 and Deeside Untouchables 51. Zone B - Assassin 58, Fighter Jet 54, Tropical Riddim 54 and Cool Wave 52.

"The 'premier league' will feature a round-robin play-off between the teams," said Parkins. "At the end of this phase, the top four teams will advance to the semi-finals, where first on points will play off with third and second play off with fourth to decide the two finalists."

Based on the breakdown of prizes, the champion team will take home the J. Wray & Nephew Trophy and $100,000, second place - $70,000, third - $50,000 and fourth - $30,000.

While the 'premier league' places have been decided, this weekend's round of matches are nonetheless still significant as the two teams that emerge as zone winners will qualify for the competition's mid-season final, which will be played prior to the start of the premier league and Division One play-offs.

In last weekend's round of matches, the results were as follows: Zone A - Tuff Gong spanked Deeside Untouchables 300-267, Assassin outscored Logwood 300-281, Strike Force outplayed Unity Striker 300-269, Intouch stopped Rainbow 300-284, Dynasty edged Morning Star 300-291, Star Internationals clobbered Long Bay 300-248, Cool Wave punched Ewing Strikers 300-281, Tornado blew away Mandela Green 300-275, Fighter Jet downed Uptown 300-293, and Tropical Riddim spanked Retrieve 300-256.
