NOTEWORTHY - Re: Sunday Gleaner story 'Blame the principals'
Principals are CEOs of their institutions and must be measured based on performance. Any good manager in the private sector knows that what gets measured does, indeed, get attention.
Education Minister Andrew Holness has the responsibility of ensuring that principals are given the resources and environment to facilitate productivity. Even the best principals with the best intentions will fail if the necessities are lacking.

When uneducated parents send their unruly kids to school, how can teachers and principals create A and B students? Why are we not blaming the cause - parents?

Do not blame the principals. The entire system is broken and the leadership - from the minister to the ministry staff - must take full responsibility.
The educational results must be benchmarked to key performance indicators drawn from the business plan with policy-driven actions for failure or achievement.
Stop blaming principals.

Although parents should play a big role in how their children perform in schools, I have to agree that lack of leadership from principals is one of the main reasons for underperformance. Many of these principals sit at their desks from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. without walking around to see how teachers are performing.
