JDF off the mark

Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) player-coach Wayne Cuff said his team will be making a run for the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Limited Overs Championship after they recorded their first victory yesterday.

The soldiers, who lost their rain-affected opening match against St Mary under the Duckworth and Lewis scoring method, notched their first win of the two-week old campaign after defeating St Thomas by 91 runs in their Zone C clash at Up Park Camp yesterday.

Batting first, the JDF made 131 with Cuff top scoring with 52. St Thomas, in their reply, were then bundled out for 41 with Cuff claiming three for six with his part-time off-spin, and left-arm wrist spinner, Dennis Bulli, who joined the force this year from Kensington, taking three for five.

"It's good to get off to our first win, which should boost our confidence going forward," said Cuff.

"We weren't pleased with how we batted today, but that is how it goes sometimes. Our next game is against Kingston next weekend, and the hope is that we will get it right there, as we seek to qualify for the quarter-finals," he added.

The zone's other showdown between leaders Kingston and St Mary at Sabina Park saw Kingston winning by 74 runs.

Batting first, Kingston made 224 with Brendan Nash getting 67 and Chadwick Walton 65 against Akeem Lowe 3-26.

St Mary, in response, were restricted to 150 with Maurice Clarke hitting a top score of 38 and Domaine Wilson getting 21. André Bryce, three for nine, took most wickets for the victors.
