Issue: Here we go again - now it's JEEP

Phillip Paulwell

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I must admit that I get very concerned for my beloved country when I observe the People's National Party (PNP) spouting its job-creating programme, JEEP.

I remember some years ago Phillip Paulwell's proposal of 40,000 call-centre jobs. There was a feature on the radio while I was travelling in a vehicle with some friends. For a bit of fun, I said to the driver to stop the car because I wanted to have a good view of some pigs flying in the sky.

The driver didn't stop, but my point was that what the then minister was proposing was equivalent to pigs flying.

The JEEP initiative, as a means of providing jobs for my fellow Jamaicans that do not have one, is as far-fetched as pigs flying. What it would be, though, is the use of scarce resources to pay for selected PNP-connected family and friends, placed in unproductive posts that do not contribute to the economic regeneration of the country.

I think that JEEP is cynical and dishonest, developed by a bunch of desperate people simply to fool the Jamaican populace. What I want from the Opposition is well-costed proposals that will take the country forward, not backward.
