'Teacher Henry' - a community stalwart
WESTERN BUREAU:
It has been 20 years since retired educator Mervis Henry walked away from the classroom, but she has left her mark on the community of Kensington and its environs.
'Teacher Henry', as she is still affectionately called, left her native parish of St Ann 53 years ago and relocated to St James and made Kensington her home.
She began teaching in 1964 at the Springfield All-Age School, following a family trend.
"From early days, most of my relatives were teachers, so I just continued the trend," she explained.
Today, this energetic 85-year-old community stalwart continues to serve as chairman of the Kensington Basic School Board of Directors.
"I am enjoying my retirement. I am now able do a bit of gardening, farming, and there is also church and social work."
