- Gleaner in 3-on-3basketball quarter-finals
The Gleaner advanced to the quarter-final round of the three-on-three Business House Division II basketball competition after back-to-back wins over BOJ and Cool Pros on Monday and Wednesday, respectively, at the Stadium Courts.
The 'newsmen' thus ended their preliminary-round fixture with nine wins and five losses from 14 matches. On Monday, The Gleaner defeated BOJ 34-27 and on Wednesday clipped Cool Pros 30-29.
In both games, Gleaner shooting guard and captain Omar Wolfe topped the scoring with 24 and 27 points, respectively.
The Gleaner squad comprises Wolfe, Jermaine Bailey, Joe Harris, Ricardo Blackstock, Andre Johnson, Derval Davis, Raymond Simpson and Brent Gordon.
The Gleaner also made it to the quarter-finals last year, eventually losing to subsequent champions Jamaica Teachers' Association in the best-of-three semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the unbeaten Western Sports topped the preliminary round in Division II, winning all 14 matches, and are favourites to lift the title and return to Division I.
- Jamalco are BH35-over champions
Jamalco won the first trophy of the 2011 Business House cricket season last Sunday when they defeated Digicel by 49 runs in the Business House Cricket Board's 35-over final at Jamalco.
Batting first, Jamalco raced to 172 for nine off their allotted 35 overs - former national Under-19 player Peat Salmon getting 48, former Jamaica player Maurice Kepple 40, and Errol Thomas Jr 34; Jowayne Robinson 3-38, Sadique Henry 2-21.
Digicel replied with 123 all out in 29.2 overs - Gregory Buchanan 27, Henry 20; Thomas 4-25, while Kepple, Salmon and Collis Johnson took two wickets each.
Two weeks earlier, Jamalco defeated NWC by four wickets in the semi-final at Jamalco. NWC 108 off 31.1 overs - Fabian Forbes 25, David Morgan 23; Devon Gordon 3-30, Errol Thomas Jr 2-20. Jamalco 112 for six - Kepple 41 not out; Thomas 31; Forbes, Chris Senior and Duran Whyte taking two wickets each.
The semi-finals of the Reggae Jammin 50-over league are on tomorrow, with LIME vs NWC at Chalmers Avenue and NHT vs defending champions Jamaica Broilers at Mico College, both matches starting at 10 a.m.
- Inter-Bank football
The Sagicor Group scored a notable upset in the opening round of the JNBS/Western Sports Norman Goodison Inter-Bank football league last Sunday, coming from behind to surprise NCB 3-1 at the NWC playing field, Mona.
After a goalless first half, NCB opened the scoring in the 60th minute through Dillon Dixon. But the Sagicor Group hit back with a brace from Samuel Harris and a third goal from Marvin McLean to seal the issue.
In the second match at the NWC playing field, defending champions Scotiabank Group crushed RBC Royal Bank 5-0, thanks to a double strike by Jermaine Gardner and one each from Richard West, Stefan Bartley and Akeeli Martin.
In the third match played last Sunday at the old Men's Hockey Field, JNBS slammed CIBC/First Caribbean 7-0, thanks to a hat-trick from Marlon Smith and one each from Lauren Riley, Dyshome Clarke, Audley Spaulding and Mark Ascott.
The competition moves into its second round tomorrow with Scotiabank vs JNBS in a replay of last year's final, at the NWC playing field, starting at 4 p.m., while in the first match at 2:00, BOJ will oppose RBC Royal Bank and NCB vs First Caribbean at Old Men's Hockey Field, starting at 3 p.m.
- Ladies beat Williesin Dip Invitational skittles
The ladies team clipped Willies Strikers 5-4 in second-round action of the Supreme Ventures/Mandingo-sponsored The Dip Invitational nine-a-side skittles tournament at The Dip in Gregory Park last Sunday.
In other matches played on Sunday, Starliner handed highly fancied Eastern All-Stars their second consecutive defeat at Mister C Skittles Club in Spanish Town, while home team Mister C gained a walkover from Waltham Strikers, who failed to honour their fixture.
In the third slate of matches (Zone B) at Mercury Skittles Club, Old Harbour Road, Mercury defeated Mystix 7-2, while Dragon gained a walkover from Rowe's Strikers.
The competition continues tomorrow with defending champions The Dip in action against the women's team at The Dip starting at 5 p.m., while Olympic Strikers oppose Willies Strikers in the first match at 2 p.m.
Eastern All-Stars will take on Waltham Strikers in the first match at Mister C starting at 2 p.m., followed by the Mister C vs Starliner match at 5 p.m.
Rowe's Strikers are slated to meet Mystix in the first match at Mercury starting at 2 p.m., followed by the Mercury vs Dragon encounter at 5 p.m.
The competition is organised by Trevor Bailey, proprietor of The Dip.
- Jamalco Football League
The stage is set for a mouth-watering final between Napoli and Top Hill in the Jamalco Football League at that company's main sports ground on October 8.
New champions will actually be crowned as the defending champions New Bowens were sent packing from the semi-finals following a brilliant display from Top Hill, ironically, the team which beat them in the final last year. Top Hill's ascension to a second straight final was secured by two goals from Clayton Thompson. Thompson, whose season highlights have included two hat-tricks, has scored nine goals so far, making him the leading goalscorer in the competition.
Napoli, who have enjoyed considerable fan support all season, ended the dream run of Port, winning their semi-final clash 1-0 at the Wembley field. The all-important goal was secured by Jermaine Christian, who played for Humble Lion last year but is yet to figure seriously in coach Lenny Hyde's line-up.
Today's final will be preceded by the third-place play-off between New Bowens and Port, starting at 1:30 p.m.
- Souvenir Strikers, Parkway final
Favourites Souvenir Strikers will take on Boston-based Parkway United tomorrow in the final of the Waterford Corner League football tournament at the Waterford field. Match time is 3:30 p.m.

- Portsmouth Primary host one-day football rally
Portsmouth Primary in association with the Institute of Sports will, on Friday, October 7, host their first-ever one-day football rally for primary and preparatory schools on their school ground, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
According to Kevin Reid, the chief organiser of the rally, the main aim of the competition is to promote and develop football within the schools and build the confidence of young players, while providing the experience needed for the upcoming LIME Primary League. The organisers disclosed that talks with a major sponsor are ongoing. Portsmouth Primary won the Portmore leg of the LIME-sponsored league. The organisers will be catering to 30 schools.
- Colours earn big victory over Portsmouth
Colours International, boosted by half-centuries from Jamaica representatives John Ross Campbell and Chadwick Walton, powered to an eight-wicket victory over Portsmouth in a Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum Portmore Cricket League match at the Bridgeport ground last Sunday. Scores:
At G.C. Foster College ground, hosts G.C. Foster and Portmore Pines played to a low-scoring tie. Scores: Portmore Pines 88 all out in 30 overs (Terrence Brown 19, Andre Bryce 15; Dwight Stewart 4-12; Joseph Lemmie 3-35). G.C. Foster 88 all out in 25 overs (Dervol Green 31, Lemmie 17 not out; Jermaine Bennett 6-21).
At the Bridgeport Sports Ground: Washington CC had an upset two-wicket win over Ken's Wildflower. Scores: Ken's Wildflower 176 all out in 33.3 overs (Oraine Williams 37, Roman Powell 31; Tarick White 3-23, Sheldon Hanson 3-46). Washington CC, 180-8 off 34.3 overs (Kimoy Hanson 50 not out, Amanja Morris 48; Vander Rowe 2-19; Brenton Beckford 2-33).

- Waterford, Garveymeade clash in feature
Co-leaders Waterford (17 points) will clash with third-place Garveymeade (16 points) in the feature match of the sixth round of the Colin Fagan-sponsored South East St Catherine community domino league at the Garveymeade Sports Club tomorrow.
Both clubs have suffered losses to joint leaders Passagefort United (17 points). The Waterford-Garveymeade matchup is an important encounter as the winners of this match will be either in first or second place at the end of the sixth round. Passagefort are destined to have at least a share of the lead as they play a less-than-impressive Cumberland team that has looked indifferent all season. In other matches, Ken's Wildflower are set to pocket all four points against cellar dwellers Portsmouth United (one point) at the Ken's Wildflower Restaurant and Lounge, while Westchester Nuckuz are expected get the better of newcomers Rising Sun at Westchester. All games begin at 1:30 p.m.
- Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day
Special Olympics Jamaica (SOJ) will join other chapters around the world today to celebrate Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day. The event will take place at the Independence Park Sports Complex and starts at 10 a.m.
This will be just one of many that will be held worldwide to celebrate a day for the founder of the organisation Eunice Kennedy Shriver, and the message for the day will be: 'Play unified, live unified'. Eunice Kennedy Shriver died two years ago.
For their part and with the theme in mind, SOJ will have members of the media, friends and sports personalities to join the athletes and their families in a day of fun at the grounds donated by the Government of Jamaica, through the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), to the SOJ, behind the netball courts at the Independence Park Sports Complex.
During the day, individuals from those sectors of the Jamaican society will be teamed with SOJ athletes to play bocce as well as engage in other activities.
According to executive director of SOJ, Lorna Bell, "This is definitely important for nation building and it is good that some members of the media have agreed to come out and play with us, as we have always had the problem where we have to be explaining the game of bocce to them. This will give them the opportunity to learn the sport."
Also, the day's activities will have Jamaica's Special Olympics team to the 2013 World Winter Games displaying their talent and skill that won them a gold medal at the last Winter Games in Boise, Idaho, and will also have Jamaica Paralympians participating.
