WESTERN BUREAU:

Humble Lion added another deflating chapter to Village United's miserable start to the 2011-12 National Premier League yesterday afternoon, when they score a gutsy 2-1 win over the Trelawny outfit at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium.

The Humble Lion team, which now have six points from three games, got their goals through the veterans Kevin Lamey and Mark Miller.

The Village United team, which is still without a point after three games, got their consolation goal from Romaine Roberts.

"I didn't like the way we played today... we had a big field with a very good surface but we did not use it as well as we should," said Humble Lion's coach, Lenworth Hyde Snr. "We have to give a lot of credit to our opponents because they forced us to dig deep to come away with this win."

After a slow start, Village United got the first clear chance in the eighth minute when Lacon Brissett curled a fabulous free kick which shaved the upright.

In the 12th minute, Humble Lion should have scored when Lamey pounced on a pass some six yards from goal, but fumbled badly. Another chance fell to Lamey two minutes later, but he struck the ball straight at the goalkeeper.

Midway the half, Humble Lion took control, but lack of purpose before the goal resulted in a number of promising breaks coming to nothing as especially Lamey looked unsure as to whether to shoot or provide assists for his teammates.

Toward the end of the half, Village wasted one of the easiest chances of the game. In the 44th minute, they caught Humble Lion flat on a counter-attack, but Teofore Bennett failed to finish on target and the half ended 0-0.

The second half started with Humble Lion looking quite purposeful and they were rewarded in the 49th minute. A fumble developed before the Village goal and the alert Lamey helped the ball across the goal line, making the score 1-0.

Finding themselves behind, Village went into overdrive, putting pressure on Humble Lion. Village eventually found the equaliser in the 77th minute when Roberts pounced on a long pass from midfield and fired past the advancing goalkeeper, making the score 1-1.

With momentum in their favour, Village United missed a few opportunities to put away the game.

Humble Lion duly obliged and got the game's winning goal in the 86th minute, when Miller caught the defence napping on a counter-attack and nodded in the ball from close range, making the final score 2-1.
