Let's talk life - Sleep deprived
- Sleep deprived
Dear Counsellor,
I have been bothered by sleep problems for the last five years. I go to bed late and wake up early. I don't feel rested and I have tried many different preparations without much help.
Dear Caroline,
Sleep problems are very common and the sleep-aid industry is very big. You need to make a sleep log every day. Make an entry for time to bed and time awake. Try and recall your dreams and record them. Write down your thoughts before you go to sleep. Make a list of your problems and brainstorm the possible solutions. Empty your mind before you sleep. Read Psalm 23 before you close your eyes.
Recording of this information is to allow you to identify trends and to set a routine for going to bed. Changes will occur over time as the problem is long-standing. Setting a routine for bedtime is important as your body will get used to the routine. Many times, we are unable to sleep because we are thinking about our problems.
Unresolved issues from the past can be at the root of the problem.
Relationship problems, unfulfilled dreams, unmet expectations, constant worry and anxiety may need to be discussed and dealt with. See a therapist and get yourself analysed and see if that will help.
- Forgetful after accident
Dear Counsellor,
I was hit down by a motor car and sustained head injuries. I am out of the hospital, but my memory is impaired. I forget many things each day and this is really a bother. I get anxious each time I am to enter into a motor car. I have nightmares each night and I am feeling unhappy.
Dear Raquel,
People who have been in motor-vehicle crashes tend to get post-traumatic stress disorder. Some people also get depressed or develop panic attacks. Near-death experiences are usually very traumatic for individuals and they may need to seek help from a psychiatrist. Post-traumatic stress disorder is treatable and is very common. Therapy is available as well as medications.
Some patients with a head injury tend to get amnesia. You need to get a neurological examination and a neuropsychological assessment. You will have to see a neurologist and a neuropsychologist to get these evaluations done.
