Tamar Lambert, captain of St Catherine CC, says his team is more than happy to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Captain's Bakery Limited-Overs Championship.
St Catherine CC, who are one of several teams trying to take the title away from the Xavier Marshall-led St Ann, qualified yesterday after overnight rain and a soggy outfield forced a no-result draw in their Group B clash against G.C. Foster College at Chedwin Park.
The result moved St Catherine CC to 10 points and in an unassailable qualifying position, as no two teams in the group can surpass them.
The Krishmar Santokie-led Clarendon, six points, G.C. Foster, four, the Daren Powell-led St Elizabeth, three, and St Catherine CA, zero, round off the group's standings.
"It's nice to know that we are now in the quarter-finals and have a legitimate chance of winning the title," said Lambert, whose team has failed to lift the title in the past five seasons.
Clarendon improved chances
Meanwhile, Clarendon improved their chances of claiming one of the group's two quarter-final spots after registering a 46-run win over St Catherine CA at Jamalco.
Batting first, Clarendon were able to post 133 after overnight rains and a wet outfield reduced the match to 30 overs per team. Brian Buchanan, with 36, top scored for the Clarendonians while off-spinner Pete Salmon, 3-22, and Jonio Beckford, 3-26, took most wickets for visitors.
In their turn at bat, St Catherine were then restricted to 87, with West Indies pacer Krishmar Santokie taking four for seven and Omar Knight 2-13.
In other results, Westmoreland defeated Trelawny by 95 runs at Little London in Group A.
Police defeated St Mary by 61 runs at Elletson Road in Group C.
The other Group C game between Kingston and St Thomas saw Kingston winning by 10 wickets at Sabina Park.
Melbourne defeated Boys' Town by seven wickets at Boys Town in Group D.
The group's other game between Kensington and Kingston and St Andrew at Kensington Park saw the latter gaining a walkover after the umpires called off the game due to an unprepared outfield.
