Quickies: Protoje presents lyrics to album

Published:Friday | October 7, 2011 | 12:00 AM

Singjay Protoje has released The Seven Year Itch Lyric Book, which features the lyrics of all 13 songs from his debut album The Seven Year Itch, along with the dates that the songs were written. The album is produced by Don Corleon for Doncorleon Records.

In a release, the singjay said, "One of the most popular requests I have received is about finding the lyrics to my album, The Seven Year Itch. With that in mind, I decided to link with the reliably prolific graphic designer, Taj Francis, to design The Seven Year Itch Lyric Book. Additional help in the form of proofreading came from Dutty Bookman (whose book was published just days ago), then Leian Ivey (web designer) put it all together so that I can now present it to you all at http://www.protoje.com/lyricbook."

Ladies get a 'Sunkiss'

Three is definitely a charm with Sunkiss. The super drink-inclusive party is heading into its third staging and already is the most anticipated party in Negril this Heroes Weekend.

Affiliated Events, the promoter of Sunkiss, has joined forces with Charley's JB Rum to make Sunkiss Bikini Goddesses bigger and better. Sunkiss Bikini Goddesses will be held on Saturday, October 15, at Jamaica Tamboo, Negril Beach, from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Female patrons who come out early will be able to get free body piercing, temporary tattoos and body painting. They will also be treated to Hipnotiq, Mudslide and Campari shots from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. The promoters have made it clear that the event is geared towards women and they will even have a 'Ladies Only Liqueur' bar that will serve them their favourite cocktails and daiquiris.

Musical treats at Sunkiss Bikini Goddesses will be served by ZJ Chrome, Bloodline Sounds and DJ Absolute from Links FM.

Admission is $1,500 presold, with a limited two-for-one female special, and $2,000 at the gate. Ticket outlets are House of Style Sav-la-Mar, World of Sports Negril, Mariners Negril Beach Club and Jerky's MoBay.

Sunkiss Bikini Goddesses is the flagship event for the newly formed weekend Destination Negril: Heroes Weekend Getaway from Friday, October 14, to Sunday, October 16.

Darkcide launches record label

Popular Kingston-based sound system Darkcide International continues to expand its musical portfolio with the launch of a record label. The Darkcide Label, in collaboration with Freeze Productions, last week, released its first official compilation via iTunes, titled the Menke Riddim. It features controversial songs such as Ding Dong's Jamaican Groupie.com, Tony Matterhorn's Purple Messages (Blackberry Broadcast) and the title track Menke with Ninja Kid and ZJ Wah Wa.

As part of the promotional campaign, an accompanying medley video was shot on Sunday under the watchful eyes of director Christopher Campbell of Iceyjace Film Factory. Locations in St Andrew included Gordon Town, Papine, and the cool hills of Irish Town.

The video follows an African theme and features ZJ Wah Wa, Ninja Kid and rising stars Chedda, Shades and Reack, with cameos courtesy of 2010 Heineken Green Synergy finalist DJ Naz and Suncity FM's DJ Calico. Other artistes on the compilation include Blak Ryno and Onton. Now in its editing phase, the video is set to premiere in approximately two weeks.

Pomedy goes to Britain

Whether as a recording artiste, edutainer, author or teacher, Yasus Afari is always breaking new ground.

The dub poet stays true to form with his latest venture, taking his popular Pomedy series to Britain.

Yasus and an evolving cast are scheduled to do five dates in England and Wales, starting Friday, October 14, at the Broadway Theatre in Catford, London. Accompanying him from Jamaica will be poet/humorist Joan Andrea Hutchinson, a regular performer on The Pomedy Show, which debuted in Jamaica in June 2009.

The Jamaica-born, Britain-based comedian Ping Wing will join The Pomedy Show at the Broadway Theatre, Catford, London, as well as the Drum, Wales, and Wolverhampton. Also scheduled to appear on the British Pomedy Tour are Jam Folk, a Jamaican quintet that specialises in Jamaican folk and patriotic songs.

Yasus Afari is excited about performing again in Britain. The Pomedy events take place less than one year before Jamaica's 50th anniversary of independence from England. "There's an historical link between the two countries. England has played a pivotal role in Jamaican history, but Jamaicans have also taught the British people a lot," he said.

Shebada, Delcita give NY 'Double Dose'

For the first time, top Jamaican actors Shebada and Delcita are hitting the US hard with a 'two-for-one' of comedic entertainment on Thanksgiving weekend, offering two explosive plays for one price.

Theatregoers in the Tri-state area should brace themselves for an infectious weekend of Jamaican comedy as promoters Irish and Chin offer more bang for the buck with stagings of Double Dose (with Shebada) and The Plumber (with Delcita) in Hartford, Connecticut, at Weaver High School on Saturday, November 26. Following that is Double Dose (Shebada) and Ova Mi Dead Body (with Delcita) at Evander Childs High School in Bronx, New York, on Sunday, November 27. Adding to the gut-wrenching humour of Shebada and Delcita will be all-star casts, with favourites like Bad Boy Trevor and Jookie Jam.

"This year was a very good year for our theatre productions," said Garfield 'Chin' Bourne of Irish and Chin. "Giving our patrons two shows for one price is our way of thanking them for their support."

With two-for-one being the rave in Jamaica, sometimes attracting more than 8,000 patrons for a single staging, there is no doubt that the US debut of the concept will be a hit. Theatregoers will get to experience a full night of immense laughter, big fun and entertainment in Hartford and the Bronx for one discounted price. Each event will feature early warm and intense musical vibes by DJ Roy, then four hours for the scheduled plays, including one intermission.
