THE EDITOR, Sir: It is with some alarm that I note the impending appointment of Sally Porteous as custos rotulorum for the parish of Manchester.

Ms Porteous has been one of the most divisive and tribal forces to have entered the political state in this parish. To have her resign as councillor and to be appointed custos flies in the face of tradition, decency and good order.

The office of custos, like that of the governor general, ought to admit of persons who have the capacity to put their political party preferences aside. Ms Porteous has, to date, not exhibited any such inclination or capacity.

We are aware that persons who have been appointed custos in various parishes have political preferences. One recent such appointment has drawn the acclamation of all, despite known affiliation, philanthropy, involvement in civic affairs, and an ability to cross lines in business and friendship.

Ms Porteous has no history of demonstrating these qualities, nor do the people of Manchester perceive her as having made any attempt to cultivate inclusiveness. It would be a sad day when she becomes custos.
