Glenmuir secure top spot

Six-time Ben Francis Cup champions Glenmuir High School placed themselves in line for a seventh shot at the coveted title yesterday afternoon when they defeated Kemps Hill 1-0 to finish atop Zone I of the 2011 ISSA/Gatorade/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition.

Glenmuir, which needed to win yesterday's game to top the group ahead of previous group leaders Denbigh High, which completed their fixtures with 30 points, secured victory courtesy of a goal by top striker Paul Wilson.

Clarendon College took top honours in Zone I after playing out a 2-2 draw with last year's beaten daCosta Cup finalists Lennon High in their top-of-the-table clash. The point took them to 30 and in the Ben Francis KO.

In Zone C, the high-riding Cedric Titus emerged winners of the group after scoring a 1-0 win against Brown's Town, which lifted them to 25. The three points allowed them to overtake Marcus Garvey Technical, which had completed their fixtures with 23.

In Zone K, where four teams entered yesterday's final round with a chance of making the inter-zone round, Buff Bay High and Titchfield High were the fortunate two, winning their games by respective 6-0 and 5-0 margins, which resulted in them jointly topping the zone with 19 points. However, Buff Bay earned the Ben Francis KO slot by virtue of a superior goal difference.

Paul Bogle High, which needed a win to secure the Zone L Ben Francis KO slot, duly obliged, scoring a 5-0 win over Robert Lightbourne to top the group ahead of St Thomas Technical with 17 points. St Thomas Technical had already completed their fixtures on 15 points.

The final inter-zone and Ben Francis KO slots will be decided this afternoon when Zone A contenders Cornwall College and Spot Valley High, who are both on 23 points, square off in Montego Bay to see which of them will join St James High (24) in the inter-zone.
