Flames look to burn Lions

Lucea Flames will be seeking to scorch yet another opponent in the 2011-12 Western Basketball Association (WBA) Division One League this afternoon, when they seek to make it four consecutive wins in their game against MoBay Lions at the Montego Bay Cricket Club Courts, starting at 5 p.m.

Based on their impressive start to the season and that of their opponents, who have one win and one loss in two games, perennial contenders Flames, one of the favourites to win the title, should win again and, in the process, strengthen their bid to qualify for the NBL (west) Championship which starts in December.

"Flames are looking quite good, but it is still fairly early in the competition and other teams are also playing very well," said Deon Williams, the competition's coordinator. "As the organisers, we are pleased with the quality play we have seen from most of the teams."

In their last outing against the fancied Montego Bay Boys Club, Warriors, at Watson Taylor Park in Lucea last weekend, the ruthless Flames were all the rage after losing the first quarter, coming away with a big 62-32 win.

Warriors won the first quarter 9-6, but that was their last hurrah as Flames rebounded to win the other three quarters by 22-5, 19-5 and 15-13 margins, respectively. Craig Dorman with 17 points, and Sheldon Myrie with nine, were the stars for Flames. Andre Parkinson, with nine points, got most points for the Warriors.

Opportunity to rebound

The Warriors, who now have a win and a draw from their two games, will get a quick chance to rebound as they play host to the inconsistent Granville Wolfpack at Montego Bay Cricket Club courts tomorrow, starting at 5 p.m.

In other games played last weekend, Wolfpack registered their first win of the season, turning in a very outstanding performance to outclass Spartans 60-30, while the silky- smooth Montego Bay Cricket Club Knights notched their fourth consecutive win, taming Lions 66-40.

Against Spartans at the Negril Community Centre, Wolfpack were quite smooth, winning the respective quarters 16-2, 18-6, 13-10 and 13-12. Andre Uter, who was red-hot from the three-point line, got 22 points, while Daniel Malcolm got 19.

While buckling to their third defeat of the season, Spartans were spared total embarrassment by Goshen Hylton and Garfield Robinson, who netted eight points each.

In their demolition job on the Lions, the free-flowing Knights surprisingly lost the first and third quarters by 9-5 and 15-8 margins. However, their dominance in the second and final quarter - which they won 18-4 and 35-12 - was enough to tame the Lions.
