Xcaliba still believes ... puts faith in old work

In 1995, when he recorded Hotter Than July, deejay Xcaliba believed he had finally scored a winner. Sixteen years later, he feels the same way about the song which features singer Junior Muffin.
Hotter Than July is one four songs by Xcaliba recently re-released by producer Junior Dodd on his Basement label. The others are Mama Africa (featuring Zarca), Heed To The Call and Young Girl which was done with Kash.
According to Xcaliba, Hotter Than July showed some promise when it was first released overseas.
"It got some rotation in New York and London, but if it had more promotion I know it woulda do much better," he said.
The Basement songs are a teaser for Xcaliba's debut album which is expected to be complete by December. It is being produced by Dodd, son of legendary Studio One patriarch Clement 'Coxson' Dodd.
Return to music
The project marks a return to the music scene for the 40-year-old toaster whose real name is Winston Ellis.
"Wi tek a likkle break from the business 'cause Missa Dodd did leave out but wi trying to finish what wi did start," Xcaliba said.
Xcaliba, who is originally from Old Braeton in St Catherine, has been pounding the dancehall pavement for some time. He cut his first song, Solid Gold, as Junior Banton in 1991 for singer/producer Sugar Minott's Youthman Promotions.
A flurry of songs followed for several independent producers including Tommy Mason, Boris White and Peter Blake. He also recorded for the established Bunny 'Striker' Lee, Computer Paul and Roy Francis of Mixing Lab.
After a self-imposed break, Xcaliba reunited with Dodd and put a fresh spin on their collaborations of the 1990s. His most recent work has not been limited to Dodd's camp; he has also recorded Jah Is Watching Over Me and How Yuh Bubble So for the Catalyst Entertainment Group.
