Champions of Champions in big clash tomorrow

WESTERN BUREAU:Premier league champions Fighter Jet and Division One champions Uptown will be going after the ultimate prize in western domino tomorrow when they square off in J Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Champion of Champions clash at Carey Park in Trelawny, starting at 1:30 p.m.

The teams secured their respective Champion of Champions place last weekend when Fighter Jet defeated Tropical Riddim 300-260 to win the Premier League championship, and Uptown clipped Intouch 300-297 to seal the Division One title.

"We are going to win this title because we have too much pride to allow a Division One team to beat us," said Marlon 'Hero' Hamilton, the captain of the Fighter Jet. "We are the best team in the west and we are going to prove it again."

Last year, Division One champions Star International spanked the Premier League champions Assassin for the Champion of Champions Trophy, but Uptown's captain Walford Morgrade, who is also president of the Western Domino League, is confident his team can pull off a similar feat.

"We would like to do what Star International did to Assassin last year," said Morgrade. "We want to end the season with two titles, so our opponents can expect a tough battle."

In last weekend's Premier League final, the classy Fighter Jet completely overwhelmed Tropical Riddim, especially in the latter stages of the game. Fighter Jet transformed a good 155-147 half-time lead into a second-half rout, which allowed them to walk away with $100,000 and the J Wray & Nephew Trophy with a massive 300-260 win.

"We knew we could not be beaten because we are the best team in this league," said Hamilton, singing the praises of his Fighter Jet team. "Once we play to our true ability, no team can beat us ... . We are the true world boss in domino."

In the Division One final it was a nail-biting affair all the way. In the end Uptown, seemingly on the verge of defeat with Intouch just needing to win four more games at 296-287, snatched victory by winning 13 consecutive games to pocket the $75,000 winner's prize.

"It was a fantastic competition and it was great to have a team from all four parishes involved in one of the finals," said Morgrade. "I must say a big thank you to J Wray & Nephew for their sponsorship, which allowed us to showcase the strength of domino here in the west."
