Waterhouse midfielder Vincent Earle has hailed Wednesday's announcement that beer company Red Stripe has signed a three-year deal to become title sponsors of the National Premier League.

The deal, which will see the league now being referred to as the Red Stripe Premier League, is estimated to be worth over $150 million, and according to Earle, this should go a long way in helping clubs to meet their financial obligations as they try to develop the game locally.

'best thing'

"I think it is the best thing that could happen to the league," said Earle.

"Most of the teams have been having problems paying players. Some players have complained of late payments, or in some instances, not getting paid at all. So this sponsorship is a welcome move and should help out a lot."

Vassell Reynolds, the coach of one of the season's top teams, Sporting Central, also views the sponsorship as a shot in the arm, and said he foresees several benefits.

"Based on information that was supplied to us at the press conference, there is no doubt that clubs players and all stakeholders will benefit," said Reynolds.

"I like the effort that will be made to improve the brand of the league, clubs, and sponsors, especially as it relates to the television coverage," he added.

Clyde Jureidini, general manager of Harbour View and company secretary of the Premier League Clubs Association, said the sponsorship represents a cog in Jamaica's football development.

"It is heart-warming for all of us as it is a sponsorship that we have worked long and hard for in a difficult financial climate," said Jureidini.

"It (the sponsorship) should help us to bring the game up to a more professional level."
