ROME (AP):

Germany's foreign minister is welcoming the economic strategy of new Italian Premier Mario Monti and expressing confidence that his government will be able to push through measures to revive growth.

Guido Westerwelle flew to Rome yesterday for a meeting with new Italian counterpart Guilio Terzi.

A joint statement said Westerwelle "expressed his full appreciation for the economic plan" of Monti, who took office last week.

It says the German minister voiced "his confidence that the new Italian government will be able to implement the announced measures".

The ministers discussed limited European Union treaty changes aimed at strengthening the Eurozone - a key demand of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Monti is due to meet Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy this week.
