UWI, Deacon top Pelican tournament

The University of the West Indies (UWI) A and Deacon of Barbados captured the three-day female and male sections of the UWI Pelican International Volleyball Tournament, which was held at the UWI Bowl Gymnasium last weekend.

UWI won the female category as they beat Agozar of the United States 25-22, 25-19, 25-14 in the final.

Technocrats of Trinidad and Tobago took the third-place trophy, when they beat Cave Hill of Barbados 21-17, 16-21, 15-9.

In the male competition, Deacon recorded a five-set victory over Vikings of Jamaica, winning 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 24-26, 9-15.

Scotia Defenders of The Bahamas won the third-place trophy when they defeated UWI A 21-12, 21-14.

Dalton Myers, organiser of the tournament, was happy with the support they received for this year's competition.

"The turnout was fantastic because we got a lot of support from right across Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean," said Myers, who is also the director of sports at UWI.

"It is certainly the best tournament that we have had in terms of the diversity in participants because we had teams from the United States, Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados," he said.

Continuing Myers said: "The level of the competition was very high and this also helped a lot to showcase the talent that we have here in Jamaica."

Myers pointed out that he is anticipating a much better tournament next year.

"I expect next year to be much bigger because all of the teams have committed to returning, plus there are others who did not make it this year," Myers pointed out.
