Let's talk LIFE: Financially weak in college
Yvonnie Bailey- Davidson, Contributor
Dear Counsellor,
I am attending college and working and finding it very difficult to cope. I eat one small meal a day and I am not able to buy my books.
-
Dear Maxine,
College can be a stressful time of your life. You are not alone. Some students eat two dumplings per day, and that has to keep them.
There are scholarships that you can apply for. Check with the student affairs coordinators. Some colleges have work-study programmes for students. There may be grants from foundations or from various societies that you can apply for. Studying part time is a good idea as you are earning while studying. Ask relatives to help.
A little at a time will add up to something big. Ask your company for some help. They may pay your tuition and deduct it when the studies are over. Some companies give study leave with full salary. Work out a payment plan with your college. Students want to be at college and colleges want students.
Life is full of obstacles, but with perseverance you can succeed. Being in school is a lifelong activity, so you need to plan your way. Many students went through life with next to nothing and succeeded in life. Don't give up. You, like others, will succeed.

Dealing with schizophrenia in Jamaica
Dear Counsellor,
I live abroad and pay for the care of my brother. My brother is schizophrenic and is non-compliant with medications. What are the options available in Jamaica?
- Sadie
Dear Sadie,
There are many options. In the government system, there are mental-health nurses who can visit your brother at home and give him an injection each month. There are nursing homes where your brother can be accommodated. The price of these facilities varies, but he can be in a secure place. Ask your relatives to look in the telephone directory for the names, numbers, and addresses of these places. Let them call around and get the prices of these places. Let them visit the places to satisfy their concerns.
There are new injections and others that can be given to enhance your brother's functioning.
