Triple for Barbadian Bowen
PORTLAND, Oregon (CMC):
Barbadian Rocco Bowen scored with a superb triple to snatch headlines on the nine-race programme at Portland Meadows here yesterday.
Bowen opened the card with a solid win aboard He Is, followed up in race five with Cascade Explosion, before rounding off a fabulous day at the Pacific north-western venue by capturing race seven with Reggiano.
A fourth win could have been on the cards for Bowen but he missed out with Walkin' With Nona by three-quarter lengths in race two, when he led for nearly all the mile-long trip before losing steam in the final stages.
Despite his success, Bowen has only 10 wins from 95 starts in the season which started mid-October and ends March 14.
He opened his account over six furlongs, making all the running aboard the three-year-old chestnut gelding He Is, to beat the three-year-olds and upward by 2-1/4 lengths.
Survived a bump
In race five over also over six furlongs, Bowen and 9-1 bet Cascade Explosion survived a bump at the start to stalk the pace set by Brother Dave.
Bowen gradually wore down the leader but was forced to survive a strong challenge from Hollow The Gold before getting the three-year-old gelding to the wire by a head.
