Finding a hot meal, clothing, and health care was no worries for the hundreds of homeless men and women in downtown Kingston yesterday, thanks to the 'Day of Care' initiative put on by the Council of Voluntary Social Services (CVSS).

The event, held at the St William Grant Park in downtown Kingston, was done in recognition of International Volunteers Day, observed globally on December 5.

"The day of caring really represents what the Council of Voluntary Social Services is all about. It brings together people from all walks of life to serve one another and to make our community a better place for everyone, particularly individuals in need," said CVSS chief executive officer, Winsome Wilkins.

Wilkins, who told The Sunday Gleaner that the initiative is now in its sixth year, said the idea to focus on downtown Kingston was due to the overwhelming needs of the homeless.

"This is where we have the majority of street people and we recognise that their needs are many," she said.

Getting volunteers to help

"What we are doing today is not just a matter of handing out food. In our coordinated approach, what we basically did was call on individuals and volunteer groups from right across the board to come out and impact the lives of persons living on the streets of downtown Kingston," she said.

Angela Johnson and her team from Children First pitched tents and ensured that the cosmetic and medical needs of the homeless were taken care of.

"Children First is about helping people and this is what we are all about today. The cosmetic team is here to assist with grooming of hair, facials and manicures," Johnson said.

Phlebotomist, Sharlene Brooks, also from Children First, was there with her team to offer HIV testing to the homeless. "Today, we are setting our target at 300," she said.

Raymon Colliston, a resident of Kingston Golden Age Home admitted that he was well taken care of.

"I got two shirts, soup and patty, so I am alright," Charles said.
