A classy affair
WESTERN BUREAU:"We want to provide the children with the tools to challenge themselves to find a role in life in which they can excel in their chosen path."
Humanitarian, pioneer and entrepreneur Michele Rollins did not need to shout from the mountain top to reiterate her mantra on Saturday, December 3 at the Rose Hall Holiday Ball. The presence of the healthy children, wards of the SOS Children's Village, was enough evidence.
With some of her greatest supporters, including the Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa, British Airways, The Gleaner, Caribbean Producers Jamaica, Café Blue, Digicel, Jamaica Broilers and Iberostar behind her, Rollins had succeeded in putting on a classy affair aimed at raising funds for the children she lives for.
"Money raised from the Rose Hall Holiday Ball is used to fund important developmental programmes identified by the SOS Village, which will help its children better prepare themselves for life after the Village at age 19," were among the few words Rollins said before declaring, "this ball is not about speeches".
Actually, there was no need for Rollins to speak, the video presentation showcasing the work being carried out by the Village and the live karate presentation, told a myriad of stories, depicting the achievements that both chairman of the SOS Jamaica, Marjory Kennedy, and National Director Gregory Wint continue to expound.
"Our children's achievements are measured in a number of ways, but the greatest indicators of the success of these programmes can be observed in how challenged and engaged our children are," stated Wint. He added: "The improved communications among their peers and with their caregivers, their increased level of confidence and the positive impact the programmes have had on their general attitude."
Again this year, the Rose Hall Holiday Ball had a number of exciting prizes including trips for two, courtesy of British Airways and Spirit airlines, respectively, and live auction of vacation packages at GoldenEye, The Caves and Strawberry Hill.
