SAN JOSE (AP):

Police in Costa Rica have jailed a British man on suspicion that he killed a young Czech woman who refused to have sex with him.

The country's Judicial Investigation Agency said in a news statement Friday that the 20-year-old suspect allegedly stabbed 22-year-old Alexandra Drbohlavova to death at a camping site in the town of Colonia La Libertad, 125 miles northwest of the capital.

Both appeared to be tourist volunteers in an environmental programme.

An agency statement released Saturday said the suspect could be detained for six months while prosecutors build a case against him. The agency has not released his name.

The agency said witnesses saw the British man leave Drbohlavova's tent with a knife in hand Wednesday and prevented him from escaping.
