Fine dining for less

If you don't have fine-dining money, but would like to eat something that tastes just as good, now you can.

The sunny municipality of Portmore, St Catherine, got a one-of-a-kind eatery last November, in the form of Three Scoops Ribs & Wings in Cedar Crest Plaza, Gregory Park.

From 'little tups' to 'limin' party pack, they offer a great choice of combos, with variations of ribs, wings and sweet-potato wedges, from as low as $350. This new business is the creation of chef Kayon Page.

"Since I came to live in Portmore about nine years ago, I have been thinking there is nothing like this in Portmore. If my friends wanted something like this, they would have to leave and go to Kingston."

For the 10 years he spent working for others, though enjoying what he did, Page was saving up his money to branch out on his own. The opportunity came last year in the form of his friend Junior Rose, who operated a Devon House I Scream shop.

"At first, I was hesitant, because money changes things," he told Food, explaining that after discussing it with his family, he left his job at Raffaelle's Pizzarea in Orchid Village Plaza and took the bold step forward.

"I never wanted to leave, but I wanted to do my own thing. There comes a time when you have to take that step." Page says that while starting up a business is rocky, so far, he has not looked back.

"I look forward to being here every morning," he notes, adding that, so far, he is able to pay his staff and bills.

Page started with two boxes of ribs and now has a freezer full. The only downfall is that he is not able to spend as much time as he would like in the kitchen, which is what he really loves. Tasked with managing the entire store, he is heavily involved in administrative duties.

The man in the kitchen is a very young and promising chef in the form of 22- year-old Kamal Allen. He now has the hard task of trying to get Page out of the kitchen whenever he takes around an order.

Orders can range from shrimp lasagne, curried rice, Sun City pizza or an ital 12-inch thin crust, with a secret sauce and a combination of gourmet cheese.

"People are saying, 'long time something like this should be in Portmore', and I have friends from Kingston who are now coming over," a beaming Page added.
