Chudleigh old bypass road neglected

Mayor of Mandeville, Brenda Ramsay

THE EDITOR, Sir:

This is an open letter to the mayor of Mandeville, Brenda Ramsay.

I am inviting you/your team to pay a visit to the community of Chudleigh in Manchester to view the condition of the old bypass road from Mandeville to Christiana and beyond, which now falls under the ambit of the parish council.

From the opening of the new road from Mandeville through Chudleigh to Christiana many years ago, this road has been virtually neglected, but for what repairs the inhabitants of the area have been able to effect with the use of stones, cement and marl.

During the onslaught of Tropical Storm Nicole a few years back, further severe damage was done to this road mainly because of flood waters which originated from another road on to this one from uphill, rooting up the remaining asphalt, stones and cement it passed in its course. There are no culverts, other types of drains, etc., to control the flow of water from the other road or even this one.

We have invited the councilor/others who oversee this area, and they visited about four different times already and have managed to allay our concerns by making empty promises.

It is now evident that either - notice I say either - no reports have been made at council meetings, or if they have been made, no one cares about our being in danger of not having ready and clear access to our homes, especially in case of emergencies.

The craters, holes - call them what you will - are so huge in some areas that they are totally impassable by motorists, and pedestrians are having problems as well. If they cannot see where to place their feet, they stand the risk of falling down.

I beg of you, please stop by at an opportune time and see for yourselves.

ROSE DEWAR,

Chudleigh, Manchester,
