Mr Holness as Nicodemus

Published:Monday | January 16, 2012 | 12:00 AM

This newspaper is shocked that Mr Andrew Holness could vary the terms of the merger of the telecoms Digicel and Claro without telling the Jamaican public. It seeped out after he left office.

We are not questioning the logic of what Mr Holness did. It is the question of accountability and the trust that we should repose in our leaders.

That merger is a public issue that will affect more than two million consumers. When it was contemplated, it commanded substantial public debate, as did the original terms by Mr Holness' predecessor, Mr Bruce Golding.

That the public was not told of the adjustment because it happened in the midst of the election is, at best, a lame excuse. That is all the more reason for disclosure.
