Partying with the Myerses

WESTERN BUREAU:Odette Dyer's finger-licking gungo peas and rice, Pier One's curried goat and Beverly Russell's carrot cake were the Jamaican delights that tempted the taste buds of the late Dwight 'Heavy D' Myers' parents, Clifford and Eulalee Myers on Friday, January 27.
It was a garden-themed setting as long-standing friends of the Myerses, Percy and Murine Clarke, spread the welcome-home mat, opening up their Coral Gardens residence to host the couple, along with 'adopted' sons, Johnny Gill, Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant of the group Heads of State.
Long before the Myerses, who lost their youngest son Heavy D in November last year, had a chance to experience any other type of hospitality, they were ushered into the authentic Jamaican big-heartedness of the Clarkes.
Percy, a New York-based attorney-at-law and his wife Murine, a counsellor with the SOS Children's Village, drew on the strength and prowess of their culinary friends, showcasing a feast that included Robert Russell's mackerel run down, curried conch, Jamaican national dish ackee and salt fish, oxtail, brown stewed, steamed and escoveitched fish, jerked pork and chicken and a pot of goat-head soup, served with roasted breadfruit, festival and rice and peas.
Pastry chef extraordinaire Lisa Forte, of the Suga Shaq, sweetened the afternoon with her delectable rum and cupcakes.
By the end of the afternoon, Johnny Gill's bodyguard, Hudson Baxter, had eaten all of Forte's cupcakes.
"He loved the cupcakes so much, we ordered some for him to take back home," said Murine Clarke.
