I have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Will I be able to outgrow it?

Dear Antoinette,

These days, PTSD is a common diagnosis. People are being traumatised and so they become anxious and worried. You can outgrow PTSD. However, some people may have residual symptoms and so need to stay on medication for some time.

PTSD arises because people witness accidents, disasters, and family violence. Some women have been raped and others have been beaten. Some symptoms are flashbacks because the memory will always be there. Some people become emotionally numb because they don't want to be overwhelmed by emotions. Some people blame themselves for the trauma and feel inappropriate guilt. People are full of anger about what has been done to them. Some people want revenge, which they think will help them feel satisfied that someone has been punished.

Amnesia regarding the event is common as this is a defence mechanism that is used to cope with the trauma. People are very resilient and so usually cope. Those who are symptomatic can be helped with medication and counselling. Many times, the situation is such that the individual is not functioning at work.

PTSD occurs in children, adolescents, and adults. There is no specific personality that gets PTSD. People react differently to stress. When the situation involves the death of someone, the survivors feel that they should also have died. PTSD can be a complex situation.

Dear Marina,

Self-esteem issues are very topical. Everyone wants to feel that he or she is someone of worth and should be respected. Some people feel worthless because of the bad things that they have done. Forgiveness of self is a difficult and complex issue. We need to be at peace with ourselves and God. There are many things that we come across each day, and this makes life more difficult.

You need to examine yourself and make a list of all the good things that you are, and another list of your bad side. Bear in mind that all humans are complex beings and have good and bad sides to them. Set your goals and work towards them. Respect and love yourself. You cannot get along with everybody, so you need to choose your battles wisely.

It is best to see a counsellor to get help for your self-esteem issues.
