10 things you didn't know about Brian Rosen
1. He attended St Mary's College in Above Rocks, St Catherine, and was considered very good at track and field, cricket and football, but the sport he came to enjoy later in life was waterskiing.
2. Was the president of the Jamaica Waterski Association, and spearheaded the general introduction of the sport with a number of shows all across the island. He particularly enjoys barefoot skiing, with one of his more memorable moments from his career as a waterskier being skiing barefoot in the National Stadium pool pulled by a Cortina GT motor vehicle.
3. Worked in the family business for his dad in the garment industry. He had a small factory on Church Street and made very high-end garments. Some of his clients were Macy's, Abercrombie & Fitch and other high-end stores around the island. When he retired, Brian bought him out and moved to Newport West, changed the name to Dino Michelle, and went into the 807 business. (The garments are cut in the US, sewn here, and sent back to the US). He sold the factory 10 years later, and went into photography.
4. Craziest thing he has ever done: He always wanted to photograph the inside/middle/guts of Jamaica, but could never figure out how to do it. Then one day, he decided to do so by train. So he went in search of a train driver and asked him if he would allow him to tie himself to the front of the train to take some photos on the way to Montego Bay. "We worked something out and, the next thing you know, we were off and I was tied to the train. I don't have to tell you, but it was the most amazing trip and, of course, the photos were fantastic."
5. He loves music and, in his younger years, his favourites were the Platters, Elvis, Bobby Daren, Paul Anka, Tom Jones, Neil Diamond, Dean Martin, Sinatra and Bob Marley. Today, anything goes.
6. Took up photography in 1975 and, for many years, worked alongside numerous international photographers, which formed the foundation of his training in fashion and glamour photography.
7. He lectures at various art schools and camera clubs. For the last few years, he has worked on assignments both locally and overseas, and is responsible for publishing many beautiful books.
8. His craft has taken him to numerous countries. Some of his clients are Red Stripe, Wray & Nephew, The Jamaica Pegasus, Londsdale-Saatchi & Saatchi, Superclubs, Sandals, Air Jamaica, NCB, Half Moon hotel, Tryall Club and Jurys Washington hotels.
9. Has photographed Bill Clinton, Pavarotti and Prince Charles.
10. Recently, he started a state-of-the-art modelling agency, brianrosenmodelagency.com, considered to be one of the best booking agencies and the most professional in the Caribbean, boasting more than 70 of the most beautiful women on the planet.
There are photographers, and there are photographers. In the general category of photographers, there is the paparazzo, the news photographer and there is the photographer's photographer, who manages to capture a moment or the essence of a moment. And then there is acclaimed and award-winning photographer, Brian Rosen, who, over the years, has transcended the realm of mere photography, making his craft into an art form.
Rosen is a man whose approach to his craft of photography is that of the artist: his palate, the human body, with the female form being his preferred canvas - which he uses to elicit the best interpretation and appreciation of the female form, in a manner and style not practised by many before him, but has, since his introduction of this particular style of photography, been copied by many others.
Rosen, however, while renowned for his photography of the female form, his popularity as a photographer is so far-reaching, it has made him one of the island's most sought after photographers, nationally and internationally, resulting in his photographing prime ministers and presidents, world beauties, and cultural and folkloric scenes, that have not only endeared him to his subjects and built a natural fan base in the process, but have also seen him being recognised as the region's premier photographer.
