Knight, Wolfe to probe police-shooting case

GEORGETOWN (AP):

The office of Guyanese President Donald Ramotar says that a team of Caribbean leaders will investigate a police shooting that allegedly left three people dead and 20 others injured.

He says the incident will be probed by former Jamaican National Security Minister K.D. Knight, Trinidad law professor Dana Seetahal and retired Jamaican Chief Justice Lensley Wolfe. Public hearings will be held this month.

The three will join four Guyanese on a commission that aims to figure out why riot police allegedly used live rounds to disperse opposition supporters who were protesting against hikes in electricity rates in a mining town on July 18.

The incident prompted demonstrators to shut down the town for a month, and a police official was fired.

The president's office issued the statement on Saturday.
