Muslim anger over perceived Western insults to Islam has exploded several times, most recently in Tuesday's attacks against US diplomatic posts in the Middle East in which US ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.
The violence, fuelled mostly by religious zealots, reflects the tension between Muslims and the secular West that followed the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In response to the attack, President Barack Obama said the United States will work with the Libyan government to bring killers to justice.
