PORT ANTONIO, Portland:

Highly regarded as a young man with bright ideas, talented, and loaded with potential, Rafike Miller is arguably one of the most gifted planners and organisers of his age group.

Miller, a keen listener and someone who is always willing to accept good advice, is often described as charismatic, bold, and outspoken by those who know him well.

"It's just that I have a way with people. I can be temperamental at times, but in a good sense," Miller commented.

"One of the reasons for that is as a result of my personal beliefs and experiences. I simply do not accept negative attitudes and insinuating comments. Where there is life, there is hope, and once you are determined to succeed, your persistence will pay off."

Miller's ability to motivate youth, especially in extra-curricular activities, has not gone unnoticed, and little did he know that one of the persons watching his progress was Colenso Campbell, a senior lecturer at the College of Agriculture, Science and Education at Passley Gardens in Portland.

"He is destined for great things," said Campbell. "Not only is he a favourite among the youth in various communities in Port Antonio and its surroundings, but he is also an influential person among adults, including business persons. I remember when he came up with the plan to launch a 5K health run/walk, which generated a lot of interest and entries among the youth and the elderly."

According to Campbell, at age 21, Miller is already mature and any failures encountered by the youngster are often used as a stepping stone for success.

GETTING YOUTH TO AIR VIEWS

Miller is currently thinking of launching a communication club involving persons in the district of Boundbrook. The club would see them airing their own one-hour programme on a local radio station and cable channel. He believes this is one way of generating interest among young persons.

Explained Miller: "Its premier focus will be on sports, education, religion, culture, and health. As youth, once we are able to express our feelings, beliefs, and desires, it will remove some of the tension and anxiety faced by many of us. Getting the opportunity to socialise and interact will boost one's confidence, and many talents and potential will be unearthed."

Miller is a graduate of Northern Caribbean University and he is currently employed to CB Traders.
