UTech to honour Jamaica's music industry

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) will host a special ceremony on Saturday, December 8, 2012 for the presentation of the University's most prestigious non-academic award - the Chancellor's Medal to the 'Jamaica Music Industry, with particular focus on popular music.'
The award of the Chancellor's Medal for 2012 is being given in the year of Jamaica's 50th anniversary of independence to the Jamaica Music Industry in recognition of the global impact of the Jamaican popular music industry.
Previous awardees of the UTech Chancellor's Medal are Stephen Francis, UTech and MVP Track and Field Club Coach and Olympian Asafa Powell who has achieved more 100 metre sprints in less than 10 seconds than any other living athlete.
Same as Honorary Doctorate
The Chancellor's Medal is of equal status to an Honorary Doctorate with comparative prestige and is awarded by the Chancellor to recognise a very significant contribution which is of national or international significance.
UTech's interest in excellence in arts and culture is also reflected in the University's presentation of the annual President's award for Technology and Culture. The Technology and Culture award is presented annually to an individual or institution that has made significant contribution to the development and promotion of Jamaican culture in a field which links technology and culture.
