Jamaican woman found dead in NY home
NEW YORK (CMC):
A pregnant Jamaican-born woman was found stabbed to death in her Brooklyn, New York, apartment one day before her wedding.
Cops said that Vindalee Smith, 38, just two weeks away from giving birth, was discovered on Saturday on the floor of her East Flatbush, Brooklyn, home with a knife wound to her neck.
Her unborn baby boy did not survive the vicious attack.
There was no sign of forced entry, and no weapon was discovered in the basement apartment where Smith, a mother of four lived alone, police said. Her body was found by her landlord.
fiancé being questioned
Police said Smith's unidentified fiancé is being questioned by investigators.
Pastor Ferron Francis of the New Dimension Seventh-day Adventist Church in East Flatbush said Smith was expected to exchange vows with her beau at the small church.
Francis told reporters that Smith, who was unemployed, struggled financially.
He said her four children, two boys and two girls in their late teens and early 20s, stayed with friends.
"She had a very positive outlook on life in spite of the many financial struggles she was having," Francis said. The pastor said Smith had been involved in a simmering feud with a former neighbour, who accused her of letting his dog out of the building.
"A man accused her of being irresponsible and threatened to kill her and her family, but that was months ago," Francis said.
