New Life Caribbean Entertainment Network is endeavouring to reform the Jamaican entertainment arena. This was reinforced at the organisation's Poetry Under the Stars event on Sunday night.

Reginald 'Tychicus' Martin, a key member of the New Life Entertainment team, explained that Poetry Under the Stars was an avenue for free expression within a cultural forum.

Martin said the event was meant to provide an alternative form of entertainment to the typical parties and stage shows, while providing a relaxing and open setting for those interested in showcasing their lyrical creativity through vocal artistic expressions.

New Life Entertainment Network was formed in February of this year and launched on May 27. The organisation currently has under the its umbrella 'Reasoning Wednesdays', where patrons, including entertainers, come out and engage in meaningful discussions; 'Cultural Night', on Fridays, where the Jamaican culture is embraced and showcased, sometimes including live band performances; and Poetry Under the Stars on Sunday nights.

The events are held every week at 123 Duke Street and, according to Martin, will go on indefinitely.

Martin also revealed that New Life Entertainment plans to boost its offerings by venturing into other areas of entertainment.

The crowd was not extensive on Sunday night but the offerings were still very well received by those in attendance. The night saw a series of performances from obscure entertainers, who seemed grateful for the platform to showcase their talent.

One memorable performer, newly appointed public relations officer at New Life Entertainment, Jennifer Barrett, told The Gleaner she was very excited to be given the opportunity to share her art.

Barrett, who was invited for an encore performance after her passionate rendition of an original song, said she was grateful to be participating in an initiative that is a beacon for positivity in the community.

Poet and the night's hostess, Victoria 'Shavar' Ricketts, recited Continued from D8

a powerful poem speaking out against rape and child abuse, inspired by the recent spike in cases that have received media attention.

When she was not performing or busy with her hostess duties, however, Ricketts provided those in attendance with delicious pudding and hot tea to accompany the night's entertainment.

Founder of New Life Entertainment Network, Egeton Newman, unveiled a plan to transform the venue into a cultural village come December 14.

According to Newman, on the December 14, 15, and 16, New Life Entertainment will be providing a cultural series which will involve the showcasing of the best in local cuisine . The event is also to include an address from the junior minister of tourism and entertainment.

New Life Entertainment is a marketing, promotions and development organisation for entertainers. The organisation currently has 45 entertainers making up its catalogue, who, according to Newman, provide 'decent' but nevertheless fun and worthwhile entertainment.
