Skyfall premiere pulls in big crowd

Carib 5 in Cross Roads, St Andrew, was abuzz on Tuesday night for the premiere of the latest in the James Bond series, Skyfall.

Those in attendance from The Heart Foundation of Jamaica must have been thrilled, as the turnout created traffic pile-ups in Cross Roads.

Green carpet, lights and signs, it was very obvious that Heineken went all out for the premiere. After walking the carpet, there was a small party area before the entrance to the venue. There, persons mostly dressed in suave suits and chic dresses, drank liquor and danced to music being played by DJ Nicco.

The night was scheduled to have two showings in a staggered format, one at 8:15 and the other at 8:45.

The stagger meant before 8:15 p.m., many persons were restricted to the party area until the other persons, who were there for the first movie, sponsored by Heart Foundation, Swiss Stores and Heineken, had entered.

Restricting the guests proved to be a very difficult task for the security guards who had to explain the procedure countless times, while being subjected to rudeness from some guests who demanded entry.

lengthy intermission

Nonetheless, when everyone eventually got inside they were spared numerous previews and a lengthy intermission.

From the get-go, the intrigue surrounding Skyfall was palatable.

The movie started predictably, with a chase, typical of Bond movies.

After the chase, a fight on a train and Bond's fall suggests to all at MI6 he is dead. The opening credits are shown to Adele's Skyfall, the movie's theme song.

Obviously, the show's star could not be dead before the movie really starts and he reappears in a short sex scene on an island with an exotic woman.

Heineken also enjoys prime brand placement when Bond lies in bed with his female companion drinking the beer.

Bond eventually returns to England after seeing a newscast that disclosed that his base, MI6, had been bombed.

Despite his lack of readiness, he is sent back into the field to find the person who had hacked MI6's computers and bombed an entire floor of the building.

In his pursuit of the villain, he goes to Shanghai and Macau, before eventually returning to England.

Throughout the many explosions in the movie, we also see immense wit from Bond, M and Q (the computer whiz at MI6). The movie also shows the advancement of technology, with MI6 moving past its old ways of operating.

With a few more twists that make the plot interestingly unpredictable, a revelation is also made about Bond's troubled past and the death of his parents when he returns to his childhood home in Scotland.
