SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth:

ANDREW SLOWLEY is operating in the female-dominated industry of cosmetology and is enjoying every moment of it.

The 20-year-old, who operates in the town of Santa Cruz, works in a familial setting along with his girlfriend and mother. He is not perturbed when eyebrows are raised by persons who believe that he should be plying another trade.

"Mi nuh really watch that; it is just my job. It's working and earning my honest bread," Slowley told The Gleaner.

He said he has received many requests from his friends who ask him to do their girlfriends' nails free of cost. Slowley said it is an area that more men should get into; however, he cautioned that it requires a lot of patience and a love for the profession.

In addition to manicures and pedicures, occasionally, he offers make-up services to his clients. Slowley said he can do many patterns, and his ability is enhanced by his clients, who give him creative freedom.

Slowley was exposed to the profession during his childhood as he was often around his mother, who is a hairdresser. He told The Gleaner that when he got older, at times he assisted her at her business place.

"Growing up, mi used to help out mi mother. She used to do hair and mi start help her out," said Slowley. When the time came for him to choose a vocation area in high school, he said his mother suggested cosmetology. He said that it was not very challenging for him because of his prior knowledge.

Nervous

Recalling the first time he attended to a customer, Slowley said he was encouraged by a fellow employee. He said he felt a bit nervous, but the client gave him free reign over the design. He said since then, his customer base has grown and he is very grateful for where it is now. However, Slowley indicated that at times, the clientele fluctuates.

For the future, he plans to get additional training. Slowley is saving towards acquiring an airbrushing device, which will allow a faster drying time and a smoother finish to the nails.

In the distant future, he plans to branch out into the hotel sector and maybe set up his own shop. His message to other young people is to keep focused and hold up their heads.
