WESTERN BUREAU:Rose Hall Developments' Michael Rollins, the Jamaica Public Service's Kelly Tomblin and Digicel's Suzanne Saunders were among the many guests bidding for the prized painting 'Attached' by artist Hoween Griffith's whose work was auctioned at the Rose Hall Holiday Ball last Saturday night.
Griffiths, who grew up at the orphanage, the SOS Children's Village in Barrett Town, Rose Hall, was a hit with several of the hundreds who turned out at the Michele Rollins annual fund-raising event at the Montego Bay Convention Centre.
There were those who hounded and stood guard, waiting for the clock to strike 10:30, in order to claim their coveted auction prizes, which included vacations, wood carvings, airline tickets, award-winning paintings and jewellery.
left no stone unturned
Now in its third year, the Rose Hall Holiday Ball's newest partner, the Convention Centre, had left no stone unturned, spreading the red carpet for the 40th anniversary celebration of the birth of the Village. In previous years, the Iberostar and The Ritz-Carlton have taken up the mantle, supporting Rollins' venture.
"Rose Hall has energetically embraced its mission to not only provide a safe and healthy environment, but to fund programmes that encourage personal growth and development to qualify them for further university studies or professional technical skills that will ensure they become productive contributing members of the society," said Mrs Rollins, whose late husband John started the home with his friend the late Johnny Cash.
Today, boasting success stories that are many, Hoween Griffiths is just one of many. Dr Stevie Bahador-Singh, who also stood in the big ballroom last Saturday night, was very much a part of the 100 per cent goal set by Rose Hall.
All proceeds from the ball directly contribute to the educational and personal growth of the 'Villagers', reading, homework, extra lessons, Spanish and math classes, karate, tennis, music lessons, psychological counselling and football.
"The children's ability and potential, never cease to amaze me as they find innovative ways to respond to the new opportunities presented by these programmes," declared Mrs Rollins.
