WESTERN BUREAU:
The brainchild of veteran communication specialist Fae Ellington, Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) final-year students were fêted at a business luncheon at the Knutsford Court Hotel last Thursday.
Now in its fifth year, students enrolled in radio, public relations, television, print and online, digital media production and journalism at the University of the West Indies, Mona, and its Western Jamaica campus accessed front-row seats to a practical session aimed at honing their social graces and dining etiquette skills.
CARIMAC is entrusted with not only ensuring academic excellence in media and communication across the Caribbean, but are keen on preparing the students for the professional world.
"Social graces and dining etiquette skills are resources they will need as professionals. They will need to represent their companies at breakfast meetings, luncheon and dinner functions. This allows preparation and exposure," explained Ellington.
Four-course meal
Deliberately, a four-course meal with plated service, the staff at The Knutsford Court executed the three-hour event exceptionally well.
The above-par dining experience, led by banquet supervisor Alrick Suckie, sales associate Joseph Harvey, and the top-class chefs will remain in the minds of the students who graduate later this year.
The afternoon's programme executed by the students was admirable, with guest speaker Aston Cooke delivering some tasty food for thought.
At the end of a fruitful afternoon, the top students for each specialisation for the first semester were recognised for their outstanding performance. They included Shaunjaye Mitchell, Janneille Morgan, Ayeola George, Gleaner senior writer Janet Silvera, Jalesa Birch, Sophia Hayles Johnson, Monique Davidson and Kimberley McLeod.
