WESTERN BUREAU:

With Moroccan rum punch spiked with mint presented on entry, this was certainly a genuine getaway from the mundane to the rich culinary heritage of Morocco. Scented candles lit up staircases, vibrant colours caressed the iris while draping and beadings completed Mynt Retreat's Escape to Moroccan Nights, Monday in Montego Bay.

An event created specifically for Montegonians tired of 'the same old, same old', Valerie Brimo and her mother Gloria Sproul, owners of the city's exquisite boutique bed and breakfast, are creators of this breath of fresh air.

Brimo promised a ride on her magic carpet, and she did produce, mesmerising her audience with a stunning belly-dancing performance and the thrilling sounds of Mediterranean-style guitarist Samuele Vivian.

There was on offer a menu that enriched the appetite and titillated the palate. It included vegetable couscous with olives, polenta garnished with cilantro, callaloo artichoke dip with root chips, organic mixed greens with feta cheese, red onions, dried cranberries, and dried apricots.

Complementing this delicious spread, Brimo and her team added Moroccan mint tea, marrakech rum punch, Omar Sharif-sprinkled cinnamon, garnished with mint leaves. Red and white wines completed an evening of good food, conversation and laughter.

Topping off the occasion was the exciting traditional hookah room, which was flocked by smokers and non-smokers. There was also henna painting by artist Sindhu Talreja and palm reading.

Outlook gives organisers kudos for this one!
