Trained in architecture but with a passion for jewellery making, designer Bianca Michelle Bovell had her recent launch to a select few at the Spanish Farm recently. We managed to catch up with the young jewellery designer, who shared with us the inspiration behind her designs and the reason she switched careers.

The collection, aptly called One, includes homeware and jewellery pieces handcrafted with sterling silver, wood, copper, semi-precious stones and brass, created through a series of intense techniques, like chasing, forming, casting and forging. A graduate of Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), where she completed her master's in architecture, she tells us that adding a jewellery design class as an elective was where her life changed and she immediately recognised her true purpose. "When I was in high school, I always wanted to do architecture, but I always envisioned interior architecture where something can be done instantly. I found that gratification in jewellery making, and so I made the switch," Bovell confessed.

The inspiration behind her work is quite easygoing yet tropical and comes from three different mini collections. "This recent collection is based on three different collections. The bold necklaces were Egyptian-inspired, the homeware was inspired by Jamaica, and the other small pieces (rings, cuffs, etc) were inspired by everyday people," Bovell stated.

And what about the market for her products? Bovell shared, "My designs cater to those who appreciate fine handcrafted works with a great attention to detail and for people who love functionality," she stated. The pieces are available exclusively at Kerrymanwomanhome boutique, on South Avenue.
