SAJ past president remembered
Members of the shipping industry turned out in their numbers last Friday to celebrate the life of Reginald 'Reggie' Smith, past president of the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ), during a funeral held at the St Andrew Parish Church.
Reginald, who died on April 14, and who served the shipping industry for over 50 years, was remembered as an astute businessman who was a mentor to many young executives in the industry.
"His wisdom, humour and spirit of generosity inspired all who met him ... .The knowledge he shared has shaped the careers of many of us in the industry," Kim Clarke, president of the SAJ, said.
Erol Smith, the eldest son of Mr Smith, gave a touching and memorable tribute. He remembered his father as an icon in the shipping industry, who represented Jamaica in various business dealings overseas.
He also remembered his father as a great provider. "He assisted all of us in acquiring our homes. He also saw to it that we had a college education and I must say we did him proud by achieving our various degrees," Erol said.
Reginald Smith served the SAJ as vice-president from 1979 to 1980 and president from 1981 to 1982 and again from 1985 to 1986.
He also served the Caribbean Shipping Association from 1981 to 1984 as chairman of the association's Group A committee, which represents national associations and agents.
He is survived by his sons Erol, Roger, Rory and daughter Anya-Kaye.
