A NEW photograph of Cuba's former revolutionary leader, Fidel Castro, has been released by Cuban state media, Juventud Rebelde.

Fidel ceded leadership of Cuba to his brother Raúl in 2006 following a life-threatening intestinal disease.

Raúl Castro marked his 82nd birthday last Monday.

Juventud Rebelde reported that Castro and president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, held a lively and fraternal meeting in Havana last weekend.

Cuban state media said Castro and Cabello talked about the legacy of the late leader of the Bolivarian Revolution Hugo Chávez and about the challenges of the new era for the Venezuelan political leadership, headed by President Nicolas Maduro.

According to the source, Fidel Castro and Cabello exchanged on issues of bilateral cooperation and the global food situation.
