Could I be a pregnant virgin?
Q. Doc, I am a worried girl! Although I am still a virgin, I fear I may be pregnant.
Earlier this week, I rather reluctantly gave my boyfriend oral sex. For the first time ever, we continued doing it until he orgasmed.
After he had recovered, he kissed me on the lips. Then after that, he gave oral sex to me in return, making me discharge.
It was only later that night that I suddenly realised that what we had done could have put sperm inside me.
You see, Doc, what I greatly fear is this: Sperm obviously must have got onto my lips when he climaxed. Then he kissed me, so I am sure that the sperm may have gone to his lips.
Finally, he performed oral sex on me. And I am afraid that that may have transferred the sperm to my vagina.
Is this possible, Doctor? I am terrified. Do you think I am pregnant?
A. Please calm yourself. Although the sperm pathway, which you have described is theoretically possible, the odds must be millions to one against any live spermatozoa getting into your vagina in this fashion.
If it is any comfort to you, I have never in my life seen a woman get pregnant in the way you describe. So I think the great probability is that your menses will arrive on time.
You dont seem to know much about sex. So before you allow your boyfriend any further sexual favours, I suggest that you talk to an older person, like a nurse, doctor, pastor or youth counsellor, who could give you good advice.
Could it be cancer?
Q. I am 19, Doc. Since I started on the Pill six months ago, my breasts have been very tender.
Is this a sign of cancer?
A. No, it isnt. Many young women get breast tenderness when they first start taking the Pill. Usually, it goes away in a few months. But in your case, it hasnt.
There is no need to fret. All you need to do is to ask the doctor to switch you to a next brand of Pill.
Spraying after sex
Q. Doc, I am worried. I started having sex with my girlfriend three months ago, and I have noticed that after we have had sex, I find it slightly difficult to pass urine. Also, it tends to spray all over the place. Does this indicate prostate trouble?
A . No, it doesnt. What you describe is normal.
When a young man has sex, some of his seminal fluid is left in the urinary pipe afterwards. That is particularly likely to happen if he is a guy who produces a lot of semen.
The result is a brief and slight obstruction of the urinary flow, generally lasting just a few seconds. Many guys do not even notice it.
Is my organ abnormal?
Q I am a guy of 17, and no girl has ever seen me naked. This is because I fear my male organ is abnormal.
Doc, when it is erect, it seems to curve backwards, slightly towards my belly. I have never seen any other guy in an erect condition, so I dont know what one is supposed to look like.
Please dont tell me to go to a doctor because, obviously, he would not see my penis when it is erect.
I have tried to look up this problem on the Internet, but all I can find is stuff about something called Peyronies disease. That sounds terrible! Do you think I have it?
A. No, I dont. Peyronies disease is nothing like that.
What you do not realise is that when a young man gets an erection, it is normal for the penis to bend back slightly towards his belly. So generally, erections are slightly curved.
Nevertheless, I do think you should have a brief check-up from a doctor just to make sure that all is well. As you say, he cannot examine you while you are in an erect condition, but these days, there is a simple way around that. All you do is this: Use your mobile phone to take a close-up photo of your erection then show it to the doctor. He will also need to examine you physically.
I am sure he will be able to reassure you that all is well.
Will IUD insertion hurt?
Q I urgently need some contraception because my boyfriend is coming home from abroad very shortly.
I wouldn't mind one of those coil things. But is it very painful to have one inserted?
A. Well, insertion of an intra-uterine device (IUD) is moderately painful as a rule, and it hurts more if you have never been pregnant; however, most women seem to feel that it is a lot better than, say, going to the dentist! Personally, I think it is well worth taking a couple of aspirin, or some similar pain-killer, to make the insertion more bearable.
Can first sex cause pregnancy?
Q. We are a young couple who are just starting to have sex and we would like to know what the chances are of pregnancy from just doing it once?
A The risk of pregnancy from a single act of intercourse is around one in 20. But the danger is much greater if you do it round about the time of ovulation.
