THE EDITOR, Sir:

With the Jamaican public being inundated daily with bad news via the media, I thought it only fitting to seek to bring some balance and highlight some of the good that still takes place.

In my capacity as principal for the Victoria Town Primary School in south Manchester, I sought assistance for some of my students who were successful in the recent GSAT examinations. Some generous citizens of this great country have stepped up and pledged assistance in the form of scholarships for all 18 of the students. In some instances, they will cover the entire high-school year of the students, while some sponsors will assist in school fees and books for these students.

I would be honoured if The Gleaner would allow me the privilege of thanking these persons publicly.

They are:

1. Ms Anneshia Myrie, vice-principal of Victoria Town Primary School.

2. Mr Aeon Mitchell and UNNA Jamaica.

3. Mr Dean Mighty of Christiana, Manchester.

4. Mrs Doreen Lawson, proprietor of K.D.L. Agricultural Supplies & Dormaine Trucking Limited.

5. Member of Parliament Mr Michael Peart.

6. Mrs Nathalie Irving of Jamalco.

7. Mrs Tricia Elliott, teacher of Victoria Town Primary School.

8. Mrs Violet Smith of S&V Development Limited.

9. Mr Norman Godfrey of Godfrey & Associates Limited.

10. Mr. Garfield Whyte of Santorium Rentals.

11. Mr Kemar Foster of Silent Hill in Manchester.

12. Mr Marvin Meggie of Victoria Wholesale.

13. Mr Joseph Foster of Jamaica Drip Irrigation.

14. Mrs Muriel Swaby, councillor for the Porus division.

15. Mr Hopeton McCatty, retired engineer of Windalco.

16. Mr Rupert Reid of RW Reid & Associates.

17. Mr Howard Salmon, principal of Mandeville Primary.

18. Mrs Ingrid Simpson of Juici Patties, Mandeville (franchise).

A lovely transitional exercise was held at the school for these students under the theme 'Developing Nation Builders through Education', with the guest speaker being Mr Michael Stewart, principal of Porus High School, and emcee for the afternoon being Mr Lanzeford Howell, principal of Pratville Primary and Infant School.

I hope I have not embarrassed any of the sponsors by putting their names here without their permission, but I sincerely believe that deeds of this nature should not go unheralded. With this mindset, despite what the naysayers say, there is still hope for our country.
